Site Downtime

We're terribly sorry for the recent downtime the site has incurred, but we've been hard at work to bring the site back up. We've had issues with a few things including hosting issues as well as a bit extra, which I've outlined in our forum, but we're back now and we're working hard towards being better than ever before. Keep your eyes peeled for a forum update within the next few days that will include a section for average members to post news for the website in. That news can be taken and posted up by a staff member, giving full credits to the user, of course, and will be a great way that the community can take part in making the site a better place.

Also, it's HIGHLY advised to enter the Brewology Network through www.Brewology.com instead of using one of the mirrors like WiiBrew or PSPBrew because we're going to be adding news posts that are specific to the Brewology page itself about the latest tech trends and what-not and the only way to see such information is to enter the site through www.Brewology.com. Doing this will also filter the news from every aspect of our site into one convenient page for you to view! So please, if you haven't already, make sure to add the Brewology page to your bookmarks or homepage or just plain enter it in when accessing the site.

Thanks for everything folks. Again, sorry for the downtime, but welcome back to the Brew!

Apple's Censorship is at a New Low

Acen

A while back, Apple approved it's first app to be sold on the appstore that contains nudity. It confused many, many of us. There's been stories of how strictly Apple reviews and cuts off apps for including too much drug use, sexual content, violence, naughty diction, and baby-shaking. Because of this strict policy, you'll never be able to download a hentai reading app or a video streaming app for pron sites. Now, that same policy has censored, get this, ready? A dictionary app! A dictionary! WHAT?!!?! Right now, you're like, "What the heck!!!" I know, I was too. Apparently, the dictionary contains too much sexual content to be released. The same dictionaries that we find all over America in libraries and elementary classrooms.

iPhone + WiiMote

This one's a cool hack. ubiq_01 has created an impressive and simple program to show off how the WiiMote and iPhone can connect through bluetooth. Apparently, many people have been waiting for this to come out for their homebrew programs. I don't know why'd anyone want more accelerometers, but hey, whatever floats your boat.

Augmented Reality Coming in Next iPhone Update

Aug

What's augmented reality? Pure Awesomesauce

Word around the net is that it'll be coming out in the next update (3.1) for the iPhone so you'll be seeing a lot of apps that'll be using it for very varied reasons.

Here's a little preview if you don't know what augmented reality is.

Amazing, right? To play something like this, all you'd have to do is print out a paper with that picture on it and set the paper on a table. Now, think. What if developers made an app to change your outfit in a mirror, or changed your wallpaper in your room and put in new drapes. What if developers made an app for museums that would recognize pictures on a wall and put in a virtual sign next to each where you could read even more about the paintings. They could even include a link to Wikipedia and such. There's just so many ways this can be utilized and it's really nice to see this being added.

iPhone Dev-Team to Public: Use RedSn0w for Latest Update

Argh

Have a hacked iPhone but still want to be secure from the SMS attacks? The iPhone Dev-Team suggests using RedSn0w 0.8 since the code that the program changes on your phone is identical when compared to the the 3.0 firmware. The only thing you'd need to do differently is whenever you're asked to identify which IPSW is used, point to the 3.0 IPSW. That simple.

Buy a Mac for College, Recieve a Free iPod Touch

Free

There's not much I can really post about this subject except that Apple is giving away a free* iPod touch when you buy a MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, or iMac.

Of course, there's an '*' after the word 'free.' What you have to do is buy both and then contact Apple before October 8th and they will send you a rebate for the iPod touch. Check out the Source for the expanded details on what you need to do.

I still would rather buy a 300 dollar Compaq from Wal-Mart with Vista like my mom did yesterday.

Ultrasn0w 0.9 Released - Fixes 3GS Issues

iPhone 3GS

Looks like the iPhone Dev-Team released the newest version of Ultrasn0w to help fix all those bugs with the 3G/3GS.

Here's the full changelog:

  • Unusual battery depletion is almost always caused by people choosing to “Restore from backup” instead of “Setup as new iPhone” when iTunes asks you.  This isn’t caused by either the jailbreak or the unlock, but it’s a common 3.0 snafu.  The fix is to just re-run the official 3.0 restore and choose “Setup as new” this time.  Your music and apps and all that will still be synced, but you’ll get rid of any conflicting wifi, bluetooth, or carrier settings.  Then just re-run redsn0w and install ultrasn0w.
  • Remember, ultrasn0w works with hacktivated phones too, but don’t outsmart redsn0w into thinking you don’t need hacktivation!  If you don’t plan on using an official sim, don’t activate via iTunes with such a sim.  Just keep your unofficial sim at all times and let redsn0w and ultrasn0w handle hacktivation :)
  • T-Mobile in the USA doesn’t use the 3G frequencies that the iPhones support, so turn off 3G in Settings->General->Network.  (Some T-Mobile territories gracefully hand down to Edge mode, but most do not).
  • Certain unofficial plans have limitations on whether you can make calls and use data at the same time. That’s not unlock-related.
  • Some people have installed previous versions of ultrasn0w using non-standard techniques.  While the ultrasn0w 0.9 update should have removed all previous versions of ultrasn0w, these users may have outsmarted our removal.  So make sure you don’t still see /usr/bin/ultrasn0w present if you’re at ultrasn0w 0.9 (which doesn’t have such a binary anymore).
  • If you don’t need or plan to update to ultrasn0w 0.9 from a previous version, you can avoid having that red badge over Cydia by removing repo666 as a Cydia source.  Don’t worry, you can always add it back later :)  If you follow us on twitter you’ll be advised of any new updates anyway.

iPhone 3G Coming to a Wal-Mart Near You

"BENTONVILLE, Ark. - Wal-Mart will start selling Apple's populariPhone on Sunday, the chain said, confirming earlier reports by employees.

Bentonville-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc. will become the second independent retail chain after Best Buy Inc. to sell the phone. It is also sold at Apple Inc. and AT&T Inc. stores.

Wal-Mart will sell the phones for $2 less than the regular price with a two-year contract: $197 for the 8-gigabyte model, or $297 for the 16-gigabyte model. Best Buy is discounting the phone by $9.

Reports that Wal-Mart would sell the phone, but not the exact launch date or the terms, surfaced early this month through store employees who had been briefed."

Good news to everyone not near an Apple, Bestbuy, or AT&T store! Wal-Mart will now be carrying iPhones. Everyone has a Wal-Mart around don't they? Now when you are out picking up the groceries you can snag one of these Wink

iPhone 3G Software Unlocked!

The wait is almost over. Straight from the dev-team's mouth, the iPhone 3G has been successfully unlocked through SOFTWARE, just like the original iPhone. The updated unlocking tools are set to hit the net new year's eve. Maybe your new year's resolution will be to try every cellular network you possibly can with your iPhone. Here's a bit from the dev-team about the unlock:

  • The target release date for the unlock is New Year’s Eve 2008.
  • This unlock method is available to iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier, we did warn you.
  • You can tell what version baseband you have by going to Settings->General->About->Modem Firmware
  • The unlock requires a jailbroken 3G iPhone.  It’ll be installable via Cydia and so it doesn’t matter if you have a Mac or PC.
  • Please refrain from updating your baseband, regardless of what version you’re at.  We’ll have complete directions on New Year’s Eve.
  • We’ll stream a live demo of the unlock before Christmas (see the update at the end of this post)

iPhone Dev Team 3G update:

"We made some significant 3G progress this week.

Here’s a screenshot of a 3G iPhone whose baseband has been modified.  And even though it’s modified — and fails the integrity check — it’s still running.  Can you guess where the patch was made?

Running modified baseband code is a very useful ability, but it’s still not possible to accurately estimate how close we are to the ultimate goal."

This could lead to possible future baseband downgrades which would allow you to run a 3G iPhone on different carriers after having upgraded.

Apple's Let's Rock Event: Overview

Now that the festive update at Apple's "Let's Rock Event" In SanFransisco, lets get a good review on what went on.

First was Apple's iTunes. They have announced that iTunes 8.0 is ready to go. Now this new update of iTunes will most likely contain normal updates and Compatibility Added for iPod Touch 2nd Gen, and iPod Nano 4th Gen.

Second, is the new iPod Touch and iPod Nano Models.

The iPod Touch seems to have some minor improvements, and hopefully a price drop, but since we are all into it, Apple Redisigned the package to a familiar plastic box of goodies.

Now the iPod Nano on the otherhand, has inherited some traits from our Touches. It seems that now, Apple used the Accelorometerin the new iPod. So now this amazing technology isn't iPod Tocuh/iPhone exclusive anymore. They also made some major changes...

Now the third thing I wanted to review is the new iPod Tocuh 2.1 Firmware. Now this firmware is not aavailible yet, but will be a free upgrade to all 2.0 users, and the same nominal fee of $9.99 for 1.1.x  users. Here are the new features.

  • iTunes 8 compatibility
  • Genius playlists
  • Nike+iPod built-in
  • Bug fixes
  • iTunes backups fixed
  • Better battery life

The last, but not least, is the iPod Touch's prices. Here's the Listings.

8GB for $229
16GB for $299
32GB for $399

iPod Touch 2.0.2
It Appears that apple has released iPod Touch firmware 2.0.2, with the usual, bug fixes.
My Little PWNie - Quick PWN for Windows
Quote:

We’ve got something for you! (No, it’s not the 3G unlock, but still something very useful.)

It’s a tool we’ve been working on to jailbreak a phone more quickly and easily, without requiring a full restore. Unless you are making a custom firmware with specific features, there is nothing inherent in the pwnage process that requires a restore, and we have been planning this tool for some time. It’s more convenient because you do not need to make a full IPSW and use iTunes with it, but your phone still ends up pwned and jailbroken.

This tool and technique has been available to the iPhone research and hacking community for about 5 days now (if you looked hard enough) and now that we have released it properly, we are sure you’ll see all sorts of tools popping back up that have, erm„ been on a long hiatus Smile

iTunes misleading Prices...

But i thought Apple was perfect???

Quote:

OMFG! I just took these two screenshots on my iPod Touch. Look at the ‘Wine Pad’ App at first while browsing. iTunes App Store claims it’s free but when you click into it, it states “€3.99!” I nearly downloaded it by mistake.

This is misleading and although probably human error it needs to be eradicated just as quick as it appeared. I refuse to give Apple any more money this year, and if they misled me like in this instance and I had purchased it, sh*t would have hit the fan.

Always make sure that your App is free and the price stated on the second screen where it gives you more information and allows you to download. Some apps are quite expensive and they would definitely not want to be making mistakes in pricing when purchasing.
