Welcome to mac.brewology.com

We are making some major changes here.  So this is the beginning.
iPhone Dev Team 3G update:

"We made some significant 3G progress this week.

Here’s a screenshot of a 3G iPhone whose baseband has been modified.  And even though it’s modified — and fails the integrity check — it’s still running.  Can you guess where the patch was made?

Running modified baseband code is a very useful ability, but it’s still not possible to accurately estimate how close we are to the ultimate goal."

This could lead to possible future baseband downgrades which would allow you to run a 3G iPhone on different carriers after having upgraded.

Apple's Let's Rock Event: Overview

Now that the festive update at Apple's "Let's Rock Event" In SanFransisco, lets get a good review on what went on.

First was Apple's iTunes. They have announced that iTunes 8.0 is ready to go. Now this new update of iTunes will most likely contain normal updates and Compatibility Added for iPod Touch 2nd Gen, and iPod Nano 4th Gen.

Second, is the new iPod Touch and iPod Nano Models.

The iPod Touch seems to have some minor improvements, and hopefully a price drop, but since we are all into it, Apple Redisigned the package to a familiar plastic box of goodies.

Now the iPod Nano on the otherhand, has inherited some traits from our Touches. It seems that now, Apple used the Accelorometerin the new iPod. So now this amazing technology isn't iPod Tocuh/iPhone exclusive anymore. They also made some major changes...

Now the third thing I wanted to review is the new iPod Tocuh 2.1 Firmware. Now this firmware is not aavailible yet, but will be a free upgrade to all 2.0 users, and the same nominal fee of $9.99 for 1.1.x  users. Here are the new features.

  • iTunes 8 compatibility
  • Genius playlists
  • Nike+iPod built-in
  • Bug fixes
  • iTunes backups fixed
  • Better battery life

The last, but not least, is the iPod Touch's prices. Here's the Listings.

8GB for $229
16GB for $299
32GB for $399

It Appears that apple has released iPod Touch firmware 2.0.2, with the usual, bug fixes.

We’ve got something for you! (No, it’s not the 3G unlock, but still something very useful.)

It’s a tool we’ve been working on to jailbreak a phone more quickly and easily, without requiring a full restore. Unless you are making a custom firmware with specific features, there is nothing inherent in the pwnage process that requires a restore, and we have been planning this tool for some time. It’s more convenient because you do not need to make a full IPSW and use iTunes with it, but your phone still ends up pwned and jailbroken.

This tool and technique has been available to the iPhone research and hacking community for about 5 days now (if you looked hard enough) and now that we have released it properly, we are sure you’ll see all sorts of tools popping back up that have, erm„ been on a long hiatus Smile

iTunes misleading Prices...

But i thought Apple was perfect???

Quote:

OMFG! I just took these two screenshots on my iPod Touch. Look at the ‘Wine Pad’ App at first while browsing. iTunes App Store claims it’s free but when you click into it, it states “€3.99!” I nearly downloaded it by mistake.

This is misleading and although probably human error it needs to be eradicated just as quick as it appeared. I refuse to give Apple any more money this year, and if they misled me like in this instance and I had purchased it, sh*t would have hit the fan.

Always make sure that your App is free and the price stated on the second screen where it gives you more information and allows you to download. Some apps are quite expensive and they would definitely not want to be making mistakes in pricing when purchasing.

Inferno through Apple HQ
MSNBC wrote:

Firefighters battled a blaze for more than three hours at Apple headquarters, according to an Msnbc report. The fire was first reported at 10 p.m. Tuesday night, and the fire was contained by 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. Flames under an air conditioning unit continued to burn for an additional hour.

The Santa Clara County Fire Department said the three-alarm fire scorched the roof and the second level at one of the six buildings on the company's northern California campus in Cupertino. It was extinguished early Wednesday morning. No one was injured.

Senior Communications Dispatcher Rafael Salcedo said he fire was "not very big, but there is going to be a lot of smoke damage.

Winpwn 2.0.0.4

Good news to the Windows user in the family with an iPod Touch/iPhone (including myself)! Winpwn 2.0.0.4 now available and jailbreaks the 2.01 firmware for all the world to love. When I say Love, I mean it. 2.01 is much better then 2.0 in many ways.

-The whole iPod touch/iPhone seems more responsive.

-The much anticipated Installer app is now available.

-The keyboard seems less buggy.

-Includes the newst Cydia.

-iTunes dreaded "Back up" before syncing is much faster.

iPhone Firmware 2.0.1 Released!

2.01 iPhone

Apple has just released iPhone firmware 2.0.1 which seems to address many of the problems users faced with the new 2.0 firmware. Here is what users have been saying who have updated to 2.01:

  • Backup process for the iPhone is much faster.
  • SMS typing faster.
  • Some users are reporting that the iPhone seems a lot snappier after the update.
  • iPhone Dev Team's Pwnage Tool does not work with iPhone firmware 2.01 so as recommended earlier if you have jailbroken or unlocked your iPhone then do NOT update.
  • Contacts app loads faster.
  • Safari seems to be significantly more responsive after the upd
  •

Again, it is reported that Pwnage Tool does NOT work with the new firmware. If you have your iPhone unlocked or jailbroken DO NOT update as it will remove them.

Please leave feedback if you do update and let us know what your experience is.

NullRivers NetShare is making iPhone 3G Tethering a Reality!
NetShareOne of the greatest features missing from the iPhone has been the ability to tether it to a laptop. NullRiver is making this feature possible by releasing their NetShare software. Here is the description from the AppStore:

"Share your iPhone's EDGE or 3G Internet connection with your computer using NetShare. NetShare provides a SOCKS5 proxy for your computer to connect to."

So basically what this does is turn your iPhone into a wireless modem for your laptop to connect to the internet when there is not a connection around. There are still some bugs to work out in the software but it is looking very promising. It is currently being sold for $9.99 on the AppStore. If anyone tries it out, please post your feedback and let us know what you think.

    New iPod Touch?

    Quote:
Apparently hidden in the code of the 2.1 firmware we're anxiously awaiting to make our iPhones less laggy and crashy (and maybe add copy and paste!) is a reference to a new iPod touch model. The current iPod touch designation is "iPod1,1" but there's a string in the code for an "iPod2,1" which points at a brand new iTouch.

For historical comparison, the original iPhone is "iPhone1,1" while the iPhone 3G is "iPhone1,2" as we found out during the 2.0 update madness, so there's definitely a case to be made. And late summer is new iPod season. What new whiz-bang features do you think would be in a whole new iPod touch?

    Installer.App

Great news to the world of 1.2.0 Jailbroken iPod Touch/iPhone owners. Word has it that "Installer.app" is almost complete and will be available soon! In which case would cause a ton more homebrew capabilities onto the new 2.0 firmware. This will be a great alternative to cydia because it has been more widly used and it looks great. Look up to see screenshots!

Apple Firmware 2.1: For the Devs

Heres a heads up for all "Non-Apple" Devs out there. It seems the a few days after the first unlocked iPhone 3G was born, Apple rolled out firmware 2.1 for Apple Developers.  Check it out:

    iPhone Dev Team wrote:
Dev Team’s planetbeing released xpwn, cmw released winpwn, and Apple pushed out 2.1 firmware to beta testers. And meanwhile the pursuit of the 3G unlock goes on. Whew that’s a lot of activity for one week!

Here’s a screenshot of 2.1 running on an unlocked iPhone 1G. Pwnage remains in effect. Unlike all other jailbreaks (and unlocks for 1G), we believe Pwnage to be fixable only via a hardware revision. So far Pwnage has worked for 1.1.4, all eight (!) 2.0 betas, 2.0 itself, and now 2.1 beta1.
